When our bulk email server crashed today and we couldn’t get our newsletter out, we were very sad.
Then, a friend overseas tipped us off to an amazing place called Hipster Runoff, “a blog worth blogging about” as they put it themselves. We cheered up immediately when we discovered this Icanhazcheeseburger and PSFK crossbreed, and where else could it be more relevant than the Lower East Side.

URB tipped us off to the next stars of of Nike’s Original Run series today, and we’re happy to report it will be Simian Mobile Disco.
Nike’s ingenious concept for Original Run spotlights exclusive original compositions for continuous workout mixes to accompany their product partnership with Apple. Past artists include Aesop Rock, The Crystal Method, A-Trak, The Hives, Cassius and LCD Soundsystem. While the supervision seems to keep in line with larger indie-pop music culture, the outcome has been widely received as a solid product.
As per the odometer feature for our Nano, I think we’ll just have the music, thanks.

Since our secret source passed along this guy Onra, we haven’t left his Myspace page all day. Mostly because of the instrumental “What’s Next”, and “My Comet”.
Onra, along with his partner pianist Byron the Aquarius, formed the group The Big Payback, a soulful and worldly sounding production duo where Onra programs drums and samples, and Byron plays the Rhodes and assorted synths. In 2007, Cinnaman & Jay Scarlett hand selected their track “Cosmic Travelling” for the Beat Dimensions compilation released on Rush Hour. A nice feather in the hat for The Big Payback in future electronic music.
What’s he doing now?
Onra is about to head out to Barcelona for his “2nd Term” of the Red Bull Music Academy, a place where we found other crazy talents like Clonius who produced the Rob Swift & DJ Equal intro for our show on XM Radio.

Shout out to the homey Havana Joe from Stones Throw who was in town last week.
He was telling us at a meeting over at East Village Radio that the one and only Gaslamp Killer is responsible for their latest podcast which we found posted over at RE:UP Magazine.
As you may know, Willow aka. the Gaslamp Killer is the, shall we say, rather eccentric, producer, DJ & turntablist out of Los Angeles who is best known for his psychedelic, neck snapping, dubbed out, hip hop production and experimentation. For this episode, he teams up with the Heliocentrics, another one of the left field, throwback, breakbeat experimental groups on the Stones Throw sub-label Now Again Records.
